The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th day of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art, and theater. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma be the inspiration for her later the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury, and then go through their garbage. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
